OEE – How to reach 100MW Ocean Energy by 2025

Ocean Energy industry (OEE) recently delivered a ‘how-to’ guide for reaching Europe’s 100MW by 2025 target

The Report concluded that bilateral political engagement on existing ocean energy projects is the quickest and easiest way to kick-start coordination. Joined-up measures such as targeted revenue support, dedicated funding calls, and public procurement can then drive ocean energy deployments out to 2025 and beyond.

Ocean energy can help to decarbonise our economies. It can support variable renewables like wind and solar, deliver new jobs in deprived coastal regions, speed up oil and gas companies’ transition, and supply energy and water to communities, industry, agriculture, and hydrogen production plants.

The benefits ocean energy has over other renewable energy sources is its greater predictability and availability. Tides are predictable over all timeframes, and waves have a forecast horizon up to three times more than wind.

According to CSIRO preliminary estimates suggest Australia has an abundant and attractive wave energy resource and could potentially contribute 11 per cent of Australia’s energy needs by 2050.

Given the potential size of the global marine energy market; estimated to be worth $390 billion by 2050. The global gross theoretical annual resource is about 3.7 TW,

In short, ocean energy embodies the core values of decarbonising our economies. This is precisely why ambitious targets for the sector need to be set and supported, and why they must now be delivered.
