NWEI has secured an exclusive technology license from Callaghan Innovation to develop, market, and sell wave energy systems to all markets in North America, Hawai’i, and US territories. The license also includes an end-use exclusivity for the global oil and gas market.

The  technology is protected by patents, trade secrets, and proprietary data.  Present patent applications and their current status are shown in the table below. The 2009 patent applications cover the design and basic operation of the device.  The 2012 provisional patent was filed following the tank tests conducted at Oregon State University and relate to the design and operation of the active float.
